Privacy policy

Effective 3 October 2026

Lumling is a desk-wellness companion: a small character that lives on your screen and reminds you to take breaks, drink water and rest your eyes. We built it to look after you, and that includes your privacy.

  • Your wellness data stays on your computer. Your breaks, water, eye rests, streaks, companion, its name and your settings are stored only on your PC.
  • No account, no ads, and we never sell your data.
  • We only receive information to fix crashes and, if you agree, an anonymous daily summary that helps us improve the app.

Who we are

Lumling ("we", "us") is run by an independent developer based in India. Contact: [email protected].

What stays on your computer

Lumling stores the following only on your device, in your user folder:

To stay out of your way, Lumling also checks on your computer whether a full-screen app is open, whether an app is using your microphone or camera (so it can hide during calls), and how long you have been idle. These checks happen locally and are never sent anywhere.

Uninstalling Lumling removes the app. You can remove your local data by deleting the Lumling folder in %APPDATA%.

What we receive

Crash and error reports

When Lumling crashes or hits an error, it sends a report to Sentry, our error-tracking service (EU data region), so we can fix the problem. A report contains the app version, your Windows version and display scaling, technical details of the error and the app's recent technical events. Before a report leaves your computer, Lumling removes your user name, folder paths and anything you typed. Reports do not include your wellness data or your companion's name. Sentry keeps reports for up to 90 days.

Anonymous daily summary (only if you agree)

On first launch, Lumling asks whether you want to share an anonymous daily summary. If you say yes, it sends one message per day to Aptabase, a privacy-focused analytics service hosted in the EU. It contains counts such as how long the companion was visible, how many reminders were shown, done or skipped, how often it was hidden, which walking mode you use, and the app version. It contains no name, no device identifier and nothing you typed, so it cannot be linked to you. You can turn it off at any time in Settings.

Problem reports you send us

If you choose Report a problem, a form from Tally opens. Whatever you write there, plus the app version and Windows version (and your log file, only if you attach it), is sent to us. Add your email address only if you want a reply. We use these reports to fix problems and delete them within 12 months.

Companion pictures and downloads

The pictures shown when you choose or change your companion, and the companions you install, are downloaded from the OpenPets project's servers (openpets.dev). Like any website, those servers see your IP address when your computer downloads a file. No information about you is sent with these downloads.

Optional AI chat and voice

Chat and voice are off until you add your own account key from an AI provider (for example OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter or ElevenLabs). If you do, your messages go directly from your computer to the provider you chose, under that provider's privacy policy. We never see them.

Updates

When you install Lumling from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft delivers the app and its updates under Microsoft's privacy statement.

This website

lumling.app is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes standard request data such as your IP address to deliver and protect the site. The website uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party scripts or fonts. If you choose and name a companion on the site, that choice is saved only in your own browser so it is there when you come back; it is never sent to us.

Why we use this information

To fix crashes and problems (our legitimate interest in providing a working app), to understand in aggregate whether Lumling helps people without annoying them (your consent, for the daily summary), and to reply when you contact us.

Sharing

We do not sell or rent any information. We use the service providers named above only to run Lumling: Sentry (error reports), Aptabase (anonymous summaries), Tally (problem reports) and Cloudflare (this website and our email). Some of them may process data outside your country, under appropriate safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU and UK, or the CCPA in California), you can ask to access, correct or delete information we hold about you, object to its use, or withdraw consent. Email [email protected]; we reply within 30 days. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

Lumling is not directed at children under 13 (under 16 in the EU), and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date above and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
